What is wood theatre?

Wood theatre is a type of theatre that is made primarily of wood. It is a style of theatrical architecture that was popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Wood theatres were often built in smaller towns and cities, where the construction of large stone or brick theatres was not feasible due to cost or limited space.

Wood theatres were constructed using a variety of materials, including timber, plaster, and canvas. They typically had a single balcony and a proscenium arch that separated the stage from the audience. The stage was usually deep, to accommodate large scenery and sets.

One of the most famous wood theatres is the Redwood Empire Ice Arena in Santa Rosa, California, also known as Snoopy's Home Ice. It was built in 1969 by Charles Schulz, the creator of the Peanuts comic strip, and features a wood theatre-style design.

Today, many wood theatres have been demolished or extensively renovated, but some historic examples can still be found in cities and towns around the world. These theatres often require special care and maintenance due to their age and unique construction materials.
